RareSong, the First Coast Renaissance Ensemble, will present “Renaissance Rivalries and Reunions” at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church on May 16, 2021 at 4:00 PM. There is no admission charge, and a freewill offering will be taken. Per church guidelines, socially distanced seating and masks are required.
Using music and a little drama, RareSong brings to life the early history of the First Coast of Florida. The 16th and early 17th centuries were a time of intense rivalry among European nations to claim land in the New World. Around 1564, the rivalry between the French and Spanish on the First Coast of Florida was disastrous for the French. The English, while they did not take control until much later, harried the coast and settled further north. In their homelands, there was far more musical reunion than rivalry, with French chansons and dances popular everywhere, Spanish influence on English keyboard composers like William Byrd, and English madrigal composers borrowing styles from the Italians.
Founded in 2015, RareSong has presented 22 concerts in Duval, St. Johns, and Clay counties as well as three virtual concerts in 2020. Patricia DeWitt, artistic director, holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Michigan, is an early music specialist and organist. Other performers include freelance musicians Marcy Brenner (viola da gamba), Peter DeWitt (recorders) and Barrie Mosher (recorders); and church music directors Tony Cruz (baritone, St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church), Lucinda Mosher (recorders and bassoon, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Green Cove Springs), and Lynne Radcliffe (soprano, St. Paul’s by-the-Sea). All of these versatile musicians sing the madrigals and part-songs that are our trademark.
